Fast Food Service and Customers

So recently I was at a fast food restaurant, waiting for the guy in front of me to finish ordering. It was just the end of the lunch rush, there had been a bunch of people in front of me but now I was the only one in line.

This particularly well dressed man came up and cut me off in line. I wasn’t in a big rush, but I was rather irritated with the fact that he completely didn’t even recognize the fact that I existed. However I shrugged it off. He was in a suit, maybe he was late for a meeting or something and trying to catch lunch on the way.

I was no so forgiving when he started to just yell at the poor girl behind the counter. She was at most 17 years old, but I’m guessing 16. She, who only showed up for her shift while I was waiting in line, was being cursed up and down because he ‘didn’t want any god damn ice in his fucking soda’.

You’re kidding right? I mean, I understand that there are people who don’t want ice in their drinks for any number of reasons ranging from ‘the ice machine doesn’t get cleaned out enough and there’s bacteria there’ to ‘I get more soda if I don’t have ice’. So there’s ice in your drink? So what? I promise the world will not end.

She apologized and offered him a new drink and a refund on his meal. But instead, he continued to yell at her insulting her intelligence, worth as a human being and being a general ass hole. Finally when she was slightly crying and the manager had come out to try to fix the situation, he used this line

“Maybe you fuck ups will understand how to get the god damn fucking order right! All I wanted was for no fucking ice! It’s not damn rocket science! You all could be replaced by monkeys! At least they would understand no ice! Let me show you!” and with that he proceeded to throw his drink on the poor girl.

Being the oh so level headed person that I am, I started yelling at him for being a general jack ass and told him that he needed to leave before I called the cops. He told me to shove it and that as the customer, it was his right to act like that.

You just destroyed a young girl’s self esteem over ice.
The only right you have is to crawl in a hole and die.

Two other male customers dragged his sorry ass ‘escorted’ his out. Now my question is, what makes people think they have the right to treat people that work in fast food like that. It’s certainly not the first time that I’ve seen something like this. It’s not the first time that you’ve heard of something like this. So why is it deemed ok in so many people’s minds?

In my town, as a person under the age of 18-19 you really only have about 3 choices for jobs:

• Fast Food
• Retail
• Call Center

Every so often someone will find something different, or get a CNA or something, but in general, if you are in high school, those are your choices.

So dear well dressed asshole,
Do you really think that this is the job of their dreams? That this is what they want to be doing? Because if that is the case, you are a bigger idiot than I thought.

No! This isn’t what they want to do! It’s called a first job for a reason, not a final job. Besides, without them, you wouldn’t get your fast meals. I can promise you, that you will notice if they go away, more than they will notice if jack asses like you disappear.

You do not have the right to treat someone like shit, but everyone has the right to be treated like a person. So next time remember…
