^{Two of the most famous female pirates, Mary Read met Anne Bonny on her lover, John “Calico Jack” Rackham’s, ship. At the time, Mary was disguised as a man, but Anne never hid her gender. Anne was said to have begun to develop feelings for Mary in disguise, forcing Mary to reveal her true identity. Later, she revealed that she was female to Jack as well, as Jack threatened her out of jealousy, assuming that she was actually a man. They both continued on to serve as members of the crew and participated actively in most pirating activities. Eventually, in 1720, they were caught unaware by pirate hunter Jonathan Barnet, and arrested. Jack, the women, and several crewmembers were taken to Jamaica for trial. Both women escaped hanging by claiming they were pregnant, while Jack was hanged. Bonny was apparently told him that “if he had fought like a man, he need not have been hang’d like a dog.” Mary Read eventually died in prison, but the exact fate of Bonny remains unknown (it is possible she was ransomed by her father).}
