I’ve seen a lot of tumblr users giving attention to blatant troll blogs lately, and I thought that I should put together a handy guide to recognizing a troll sj blog if you’re not in the groups it tries to mock.
Major Warning Signs (if the blog fits any of the things in this list, it’s highly likely that it’s a troll, especially when combined with Be Waries and/or Minor Details)
- Does the blogger call themselves transfat or transethnic? These are both mock terms made especially to mock sj bloggers. However, note that transethnicism can be a valid identity for an adopted individual.
- Do they complain about being triggered, all while not tagging triggers?
- Do they identify as trans, yet still spew TERF (trans-exclusive radical feminism) beliefs, or say “womyn” instead of “women”?
- Do they believe that otherkin are oppressed? Genuine otherkin know that most ‘kin hate stems from ableism.
- Do they still say “die cis scum”, “check your privilege” or make PSA posts containing the phrase “friendly reminder” and japanese emoticons? Seriously, genuine sj bloggers abandoned these in 2012.
- Do they say that eating foreign food or learning foreign languages is appropriation?
- Do they always, no matter the circumstances, get happy about disasters in which real life, non-bigoted privileged people die? Some genuine bloggers might slip up under some circumstances, especially if the victim is bigoted.
Be Waries (if the blog fits any of the things in this list, it’s likely a troll, but it’s not as likely without combination with Major Warning Signs or Minor Details)
- Does the blogger have a paragraph’s worth of tags in their original posts as to stir up drama?
- Do they have no positive interaction with other bloggers? A genuine blogger would occasionally send asks to other folks, joke around with them or maybe draw something for them.
- Do they literally call folks rapists?
- Do they occasionally slip up and use slurs, and then act unapologeptic about it?
- Do they have a cartoonish usage of various phrases or terms that contradict each other, which might be because they are “sj sounding”?
- Do they post fake-sounding stories, then end them with “can you believe the nerve of this oppressor?”
- If dfab, do they claim to freebleed publically?
- Have they only been blogging about social justice issues since their registration? Believe it or not, most of us didn’t start out on tumblr as sj bloggers. I, for instance, have posted tonnes of problematic stuff in my past.
Minor Details (if the blog fits any of the things in this list, they could be a troll, but without the combination of Be Waries or Major Warning Signs, it’s highly unlikely)
- Does the blogger not publish their contact info, or vague things such as the country they live in, selfies, zodiac signs or MBTI types? Note that some bloggers highly value being anonymous, so don’t go after somebody’s throat if this is the only thing that fits them.
- Do they use nounself with more than two syllables?
So I think this blog is a troll blog, now what?
First of all, you’ll need more folks to know. If somebody reblogs a post complaining about the blog, send them an ask and tell them it’s a troll. If you stumble upon a list or a blog dedicated to collect troll blogs, bring up the blog. Add more signs to this list if you know any! And most importantly, do not give them attention. You will have to starve out the troll, and make others join you in this.
