The shit hit the fan in the trans blogosphere last night, when it came to light that there is a disturbing new section in the Identity Screening Regulations used in airports throughout Canada. Simp…This actually exists. In 2014. I have a Canadian partner, I am mid transition…I knew I had to be careful but holy shit. This actually terrifies me. How does this make any sense? Why do gender markers even exist on photo ID’s?
tbh this is nothing short of a declaration of war on trans bodies and I am ashamed of my country for allowing anything like this to happen.
does not APPEAR to be of the gender indicated ??? WHAT who the fuck decides that. this is beyond asinine
This is from 2012, isn’t it? Does anyone know if it’s still in effect today? It might not be, but that might just be my wishful thinking.
I looked it up and it is still in effect, it’s lumped in with a bunch of other rules like if they look over 18, the picture matches what they actually look like, etc.
You can present a medical document that says the reason for you not looking like your picture but that’s a pretty big hassle for some people I’m sure.
It does appear to be left up to the discrepancy of the person whose looking at your boarding pass and passport and all that, so if they ask you about it and you say you’re trans it’s up to them to make the final call.
I also know Canada is horrid when it comes to trans stuff so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was put in place to specifically block trans people.
Transgender People are Completely Banned From Boarding Airplanes in Canada
