It is. It literally is. Lets list a few reasons why.
- iPhones are marketed to upper class people
- Every celebrity you see will most likely have an iPhone
- Major sponsor of the iPhone is AT&T a very expensive phone company
If you need more evidence I worked as a customer service rep. for the phone company Verizon for a few months after the release of both the iPhone 6/6 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S5. I got many calls about upgrading their phones, and asking of course about prices of the newest phones. One question I got a lot was “Why is the iPhone 300 dollars while the Galaxy is 100 – Free for a Thanksgiving promotion.” Curious about it myself, I asked a supervisor. Why? Why didn’t we have any discounts on what basically is the hottest phone to be released besides the Galaxy? Here was the answer I got: “Apple believes they shouldn’t have to discount it. That their product is worth the full amount you pay.” Meaning if phone companies didn’t already discount your phone when you upgrade, Apple would be charging all of you 800+ dollars for that iPhone.
Apple does not care about poor people, Apple just wants money and you’re android jokes are feeding into them. Not to mention making people feel shitty for NOT owning an overly expensive phone.
(Please note: I know there are ways to get iPhones cheap. But most of the time its someone selling it themselves or its a third party that is not a phone company. Unless APPLE IS GIVING THE DISCOUNT ITS STILL CLASSIST. I will not answer messages regarding that.)
Reblogging cause I still see people reblogging jokes about how yall would never stoop so low to get an android 😒
And iPhone is the real joke.
ppl. also get up in arms when iphone-only apps transition to android (there were a lot of “ew, poor people are gonna use instagram now?” barbs I distinctly remember), crack jokes about ios-only emojis (like, yeah, I’d love skintone var. emojis, but apple locked them so they can’t even display on my computer* let alone my phone– for no reason, like there’s literally no reason for them to have done that & literally locked a form of communication, wtf is that about), and make broad remarks abt ppl’s class levels/poverty using iphones as a status marker (“why do/how dare poor people have FOOD and IPHONES,” “ghetto ppl never have iphones, they always have some off-brand android…”)
*even wrt to computers, ppl acknowledge– bc there’s not the phone carrier association, so there’s no discount to be had– ppl are more willing to acknowledge macbooks’ price difference between them & windows/google/linux pcs + laptops are exorbitant, and for less flexibility/more annoyance (those mouses!!) wrt doing everyday computer stuff. like the only ppl I see pushing hard for mac os are graphic designers & younger non-tech-savvy ppl w. loads of disposable income, or occasionally schools/institutions w. apple contracts/discounts.
(and even then, ppl can tweak their laptops to dual boot oses regardless of manufacturer, so the elitism manifests there split p. evenly between brand status items and gamers rly into hardware specs, bc personally, mac os is actually awful.)
it was the same thing w. ipods vs. non-apple mp3 players. I loathe ipods. they’re terrible. there were and still are better tools for far less money out there. but people wanted the click wheel & those white earbuds, bc they meant something, and what they meant was money. they had (and still have!) knockoff iphones & ipods specifically bc ppl. wanted that form, that image, vs. functionality– and apple has sued, even sued non-knockoff samsung a few yrs back, bcthey want that monopoly of image & hardware, so only the rich can get in. it’s super alienating.
and every time apple does sth funky like deleting files not purchased through itunes or ios acts weird or ppl point out how bizarre it is you have to jailbreak your phone so it’s a proper damn phone, folks say, “well at least I LOVE MYSELF and don’t have an ANDROID.”
which is cheaper, and far more user-friendly/3rd party servicable, or need funny expensive proprietary cables, and have expandable memory + software/file management flexibility if I want to manage my own device! like if you genuinely prefer iphones, good for you, but they’re usually $400-1K more expensive than equivalent-hardware non ios mobile devices, and while there’s pros and cons to any tech eqpt., acting like one is inherently superior to the other on the basis of brand recognizability rly says a lot more about your relationship with money than yr relationship with hardware.
