eggplantcrusader:

My method is very winging it style with no exact science, but figured I would share on my Tumblr since I already typed it all out for a friend

  1. I get about 2 yards of fabric to make pleats 1 1/2 in. and my waist is 35 in or so and it’s too big for me, so figure out what you have. Making it bigger is easier imo in the long run
  2. I measure up from the fold the length I want for the skirt (minus the 2 in or so for the waist band) so I don’t have to hem anything to make the bottom pretty
  3. cut that bitch to that length you figured out
  4. Iron that bitch out flaaat.
  5. Sit there and make the damn pleats. Get something to measure. It’s best to go one pleat at a time to make sure they’re super even. I measure 1 1/2 in and then pin it, then measure another 1 1/2 and pin it. Fold the fabric so the pins line up. You should have 1 1/2 in of fabric on top of 1 1/2 in of fabric! Hey first pleat!
  6. Iron it like crazy
  7. Pin the bottom of the pleat and the bottom of the pleat to keep it in place
  8. Repeat 5-7 until you have all your pleats
  9. Baste stitch along the top to keep the pleats in place.
  10. I like to stitch the inside pleats to help keep the shape (pic 1. The top layer is what it looks like on the outside, bottom layer what it looks like on the inside with the stitches along the inside of the pleats)
  11. Another helpful thing to keep the shape of the pleats is to top stitch an inch or two down the pleat at the waist (pic 2 & 3) If you did both 10 & 11 the inside should look like the unnumbered picture in the inside of the skirt (minus waist band and all so far)
  12. Since I didn’t have any science to the size and stuff, I figured out the actual size of the skirt that it needs to be to fit me. It works best to hide your seam and zipper if you can find a meeting of two pleats that fits your waist
  13. I cut the inside of the pleat to make the seam so it hides and put the zipper in there and since I cut the inside of the pleat, hey the top pleat is still there and hides it! (pic 4 & 5)
  14. do yo waist band
  15. eeeeeeey knife pleat skirt!

***OH YEAH IRON ALL THE DAMN TIME. Like after every step just iron just iron everything and when you’re done starch it and iron it more just iron the hell out of it without burning it and all

Good psychological games masterpost?

No One Has To Die: Talking will spoil it from the start. Amazing concept and brilliant ending. Takes about 20 minutes to complete, browser game.

Off: You’ve probably already seen bits all over tumblr from this (as well as bits, if you know what I mean ;]); French game that starts with a strange man “purifying” ghosts from a world with weird rules and elements; quickly becomes a twisted, confusing ride. At least worth a play, and you should probably check out an LP afterwards (I sure did). Takes a few hours.

The Grey Rainbow: Don’t be thrown by the art – this game may start off in a fairly usual RPG manner, but the story, though short, will draw you in and may even make you cry. Make sure to check all flavor text. Takes about an hour.

The Color Tuesday RPG (TCT): Starts off with kids randomly chosen to save the world/town/whatever, like many RPGs, but actually takes a look at the burden placed on the protagonists. Interesting if sometimes frustrating combat system, a compelling story, and an almost laughable but actually rather tragic spin on the weird rules of many RPG worlds. Beautiful in every sense and left me wanting more. Takes a few hours – LOTS OF FLASHING, epileptics take care! Make sure to play with the sound on.

Bastion: If you haven’t played this yet, I’m already judging you. But seriously, it’s an incredibly beautiful and heart-wrenching game with wonderful sound, graphics, and story. Most definitely play with the sound on, and buy the damn soundtrack. The only non-free game on this list, but well worth it. Takes a few hours, very streamlined story.

EDIT: Feel free to add your own!

ComaTo be honest I’m not 100% sure it fits with the rest of the list as it’s been ages since I played it, but it’s a beautiful game with an amazing atmosphere and everyone should play it at least once. Won’t take very long at all!

LovedA really short game, but it has a lot of replay value in my opinion.

I love psychological games, especially the ones that spur discussions due to their ambiguous nature and the ones with gameplay that reflects the game’s message. Looking up other people’s interpretations to those games is always the most rewarding thing.

Adding:

Don’t Look Back: A short browser platformer that’s a modern interpretation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Depending on interpretation, the ending can be regarded as either positive or negative, just as many other games on this list.

Braid: Just like Bastion, it isn’t free, and while I haven’t been able to finish it yet, it most certainly meets the criteria mentioned above.

Edit: I realize Don’t Look Back might not actually be fun to play though; I added it mainly for all the interesting interpretations that are made of the ending.

Since there are a lot of people reblogging this… Adding:

Thomas Was AloneIt’s a puzzle platformer with short levels where every character is a polygon shape, each with their own distinct colour, personality, issues (inner battles) and unique abilities that accompany their distinct shape. Though they may not be fond of each other at first, be it because they feel inferior or superior, ultimately, they need to work together to overcome the obstacles in each level. Its minimalistic design coupled with the development of the polygons and their relationships make the game a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Little InfernoFrom the makers of World of Goo, as you might be able to tell from the design! You sit in front of a fireplace and burn toys to keep the fire alive, continuously gaining money to buy more toys to burn. The extremely appealing visuals and effects compel you to keep burning toys (more toys are unlocked from a shopping catalogue as you purchase them, and simultaneously burning toys that are part of special themed combos gets you additional rewards) – until you suddenly realize… (whisper whisper)

Both games are aren’t free, but they’re occasionally on sale (as part of Steam or Humble Bundle sales).

I’m going to add some as well, since there’s been a lot of very interesting games exploring very meta and psychological aspects of video games recently.

Papers Please: I cannot recommend this game enough. If you want a game truly about moral choice, look no further than this game. There is no binary moral choice here, no moral choice indicator, nothing video gamey about the moral choice here. Instead, it merely asks questions and lets you answer them according to your own morals. I have learned things about myself from this game. Not to mention, it does not sacrifice engagement for moral choice or narrative. Unlike Cart life, which is the closest comparison I can make, this game is not a slog through the mud.The design is tight, fast-paced, intense, stressful, and somehow fun all at one time.

Spec Ops: The Line: While this game is a bit on the expensive side, (about a 6 hour game for $30) There has been a book written and published analyzing this game. That in itself should tell you how important this game is. It is all about the modern shooter and everything wrong with it, told not only through the narrative, but through EVERYTHING. The presentation, gameplay, and narrative. This game is incredibly psychological and makes you feel like a horrible person despite the fact that the game never really gives you a choice. I can’t say much else without spoiling it, but get this game. Get this game.It was the most important game of 2012.

Antichamber: Let’s move away from the ‘games that make you feel like a horrible person’ into a psychological game that is more interested in fucking your mind and defying all your pre-built conceptions and everything you’ve ever learned playing video games. Think Portal in an Escher like maze, no game has made me gasp in pure surprise and delight as this game has. If you are into design, it is a must-play because of all the systems at work and how this game can surprise you without being RANDOM. This game has a logic, it’s just not a logic that we are used to.

HOW TO MAKE A MEN’S BIG-ASS SHIRT INTO A FITTED SHIRT.

fuckingconversations:

I’m sure we’ve covered this already – Shirts from the Men’s section are generally superior in terms of opacity, durability and warmth. For some reason, designers like to make shirts in the women’s section see-through and flimsy.

But! I’m not here to discuss their secret plot to make people buy extra shirts.

I’m here to solve the damn problem.

Kinda.

So! Lets say you were walking down the local department store, and saw this really awesome t-shirt. Hell yeah! SHIELD!  In a fit of excitement, you got it for your sibling.

image

Unfortunately, they only had the XL size, and it looks like a potato sack on her.

Fuck.

It’s okay, we can fix this.

First, pin it to fit her. Not super tight! You don’t want any part of the shirt stretching.

image

We did NOT turn the shirt inside-out for that step.

After carefully taking off the shirt (neeeedles), we flattened it, keeping the pins close to the same location.

image

We did migrate the pins about a half-inch TOWARD the existing hemline. This is because when pinning it on a body, some cloth will be pulled more from the back, and some from the front of the shirt. If you don’t flatten it out, you’ll get weird twisted chunks later.

Then, we sewed along the curves that the pins outlined, using a super-basic straight stitch.

image

(At this point I had leave the house, so she just continued on her own. *shrug* Hooray for selfies and experience)

She tried on the sewed version, to make sure it was still loosely fitted. It shouldn’t be tight at all at this point.

image

After making sure it still fit properly (If it didn’t then you’d have to pick the stitches in problem areas and re-sew) she cut off the fabric flaps, leaving about a half-inch of of room for the stitches.

image

Apparently she also brought in the sleeves by about an inch. Just follow the existing bottom hemline for that part.

After that, turn your shirt inside-out.

image

And along the edges, where we sewed before, she used an overlock stitch.

 image

image

Do that along both sides, flip your shirt inside-out, and BAM

image

Super awesome fitted shirt, nice seams, 100% opacity, higher durability, and some goddamn sleeves.

This shit works to shrink massive tshirts down to any body size or shape.

If you’re normally a ‘large’ and you want a fitted shirt? Just buy an XL or XXL and slim that shit down to fit your beautiful body.

This ain’t just for people with boobs, either. If you’ve got a flat chest and want your shirt to hug that killer abdomen of yours, this technique works for that too.

Can I get a ‘Hell Yeah’?

Useful Writing Websites

fictionwritingtips:

I compiled most of the writing websites I’ve mentioned on my blog into one post. I find a lot of these sites useful, so hopefully they can help you out!

Imagination Prompt Generator: This give you a one-sentence writing prompt that will help you come up with ideas. I think it also allows you to set a ten minute timer for each prompt.

Wridea: I really like this site because you can write down simple ideas that you can organize later and put into a bigger project. You can share these ideas or the site will help you randomly match ideas. It’s great for brainstorming and building a fully formed outline.

List of Unusual Words — Here’s a site you can browse through that gives you a list of unusual words for every letting in the alphabet. If you’re looking to switch up your vocab, or looking to develop a way a character speaks, this is a good reference.

Picometer — Here’s a writing progress meter that can be embedded on your site or blog. There’s also the Writertopia meter that shows word count/current mood.

Cut Up Machine: This website takes whatever words you typed or pasted into the box and rearranges your sentences. It’s not practical for writing a novel, but it might help with poetry OR coming up with ideas. Experiment with it and see what you can come up with.

Orion’s Arm: This is a great website to use if you want to research worldbuilding or if you have science questions. There are tons of resources you can use.

Word Frequency Counter: If you’re finding that you’re using the same words over and over again, this website should help. You’ll be able to count the frequency usage of each word in your text. This should help you switch up the words you’re using and understand where the problem might be.

Phrase Frequency Counter: This is same site explained above, but it counts the phrases you’re using.

My Writing Nook: This allows you to write or jot down ideas wherever you are. You don’t need to have your laptop in order to access it, so it might help you during this time. You can write as long as you have your phone.

Writer: The Internet Typewriter – This site lets you write, save, share, and/or convert your writing online. I tried it out and it’s pretty cool. It saves for you and is a great way to brainstorm or plan out some ideas.

The Forge – The Forge is a fantasy, creature, spell, and location name generator. It’s awesome.

One Word: This site gives you one word to write about for 60 seconds. This should help you get started with your own writing and will work as a writing prompt to get you warmed up. It’s a great way to get yourself motivated.

Confusing Words:  On this site you can search through confusing words that often stump many writers. It’s not a huge reference, but it should help you with some writing/grammar issues.

Cliché Finder: This site allows you to enter parts of your writing and it will search for clichés. If you find that you’re using the same phrases over and over again, this will help a lot. I haven’t messed around with it too much, but it looks useful.

Hand Written Fonts: If you’re looking for great hand written fonts, this is a great reference. All of them are pretty awesome.

Tip of My Tongue — you know when you’re trying to think of a specific word, but you just can’t remember what it is? This site will help you narrow down your thoughts and find that word you’ve been looking for. It can be extremely frustrating when you have to stop writing because you get a stuck on a word, so this should help cut that down.
