Washboard — Tumblr Savior for mobile devices
Hello, Tumblr! Over the last few months I’ve been working on a project that brings keyword blacklisting to mobile devices, and it’s finally ready for the public. If you’re not familiar, Tumblr Savior is a browser extension that allows users to hide posts containing certain keywords or tags. It works great for desktops, but it can’t be used on phones or tablets, and the official Tumblr apps don’t offer any alternatives.
That’s where Washboard steps in: just sign in with Tumblr, import your blacklist from Tumblr Savior, and start browsing! Washboard also features infinite scrolling, a “Safe Mode” toggle that hides images, and a few other features that make mobile browsing as painless as possible.
Any questions or suggestions? Send me an ask or tag a post #washboard.ws and I’ll look at it as soon as possible!
I won’t need to use this anymore but just putting it out there for anyone who binds with Underworks binders
psa for anyone who’s money issues are tight.
wheregendergoestodie !! I’m not sure if you were interested in getting anything from underworks but if you are c:
😮
handy, marking for later. thanks alex!
Show vs. Tell
Great description of the difference.
I need a place to do some character building and sort out some plot points for my comic so lots of rambling and random thoughts under the cut. Feel free to read and point out plot holes/ if I’m doing some really shitty oppressive tropes. I’m really with some cultures/gender identities/disabilities and a bunch of other stuff I’m not 100% on just yet (I will be doing all my research before I start actually writing it’s just at this point I’m doing mostly character building and world building and looking up things as I go along)
I’ve been thinking a lot about Tansy so lets start with her
- Metis so River Cree and French
- looks for the most part white but identifies more with her Native side
- aromantic pansexual
- two spirited
- uses bow and arrow that can transform into several different types of blades
- rogue type
- chaotic good
- semblance is perseverance
- can be loud and obnoxious
- doesn’t always think before speaking
- very honest with herself and others
- tall and lean with long dirty blonde-ish hair
- her bow string is made up of pure energy
- get’s really upset whenever someone calls her white
- bit of an Otaku
- listens to heavy metal music like Iron Maiden and that shit
- has a huge collection of vibrators
- like seriously more vibrators than any person could ever use in a lifetime
- she’s the youngest of the group (I believe I’m starting it on her 21st birthday if I go with the beginning I have in mind)
- her weapon is stored on her hair in an clip that is the beads of the aro flag with a feather on the end (which is the same thing that’s on the end of her bow)
- has a bit antagonistic relationship with Aminia (think like Tony Stark and Iron Man cross with Usagi and Rei)
- follows Native spiritualism (I’m not sure if that’s the correct name for it)
- her Dad is Native and Mom French
- her mentor is her cousin on her dad’s side
- oh she’s Canadian from the Prairie’s
Ok I think that’s all I’ve got for Tansy now lets move onto Masako
- 3rd or 5th Japanese American (3rd on her moms side, 5th on her dads)
- Agender lesbian (although I’m not sure if it’s still considered being a lesbian, I think there’s another term for being attracted to girls I’ll have to find that out) also demi-romantic
- uses a naginato that has pink and green ribbons
- neutral good
- outfit is a short yukata
- Buddhist
- has a younger brother and sister
- 23
- very sarcastic and always has some sort of commentary on whats going on
- stores her weapon as ribbons on her wrist
- her mentor is her uncle who is a Buddhist monk
- loves Egyptian culture
- warrior type
- semblance is justice
- is short-ish with short black hair
- I know I had so much more thought out for them
- right pronouns
- I haven’t figured out what pronouns I’m gonna use
- I’m thinking I might use some non-standard ones like Xer or something
- I need to dig a bit deeper into her character first
- I think this might be all I have that I can put into words right now
Ok well now for Aminia, which even though I thought of her first I have the least fleshed out for her. I need to find someone who I can talk to and get reference for her religion and culture
- Asexual homoromatic cisgender
- first generation black Egyptian
- Muslim
- weapon is her Tarot cards that have aces for the backs
- I haven’t figured out where she keeps her cards
- has a large family with older siblings that were born in Egypt and a couple younger ones born in the US
- was the first child born in the US
- semblance is faith
- loves Canadian media
- mentor is her Great Grandmother who taught her Tarot card readings
- lawful good
- mage type
- very no-nonsense type mentality and can have some difficulty loosening up in certain situations
- medium height and very curvy
- ok I’m gonna list some things I’m kinda stuck on with her from my lack of knowledge
- I don’t know what her outfit is, all of there outfits reflect their culture but I’m having trouble finding one that is accurate and doesn’t play into offensive stereotypes
- I don’t know if she’ll where a hijab or something similar or not
- hell I’m not even sure if how I’ve created her character falls into offensive stereotypes or not
- I have a feeling she’s going to be the one that changes the most before it actually comes out
Ok world building stuff
- They buy there weapons in stored form from a pawnshop
- They fight against demon like creatures that infect the minds or people and give them oppressive ideals (racism/sexism/ableism/etc)
- {where the demons come from post that I can’t post yet because it’s a major plot point I don’t want leaked but I need to put it here to remind myself}
- they all live in New York
- Tansy (the only white appearing one) is the only immigrant
- they all met on Tumblr (or some equivalent)
- ok stuff I’m not sure about
- I’m not sure about having them all love each others cultures, I’m worried it’s going to look more like appropriation than adoration
- oh they’re in a polyamorous queer-platonic/platonic life partners relationship
- and I’m trying really hard not to make all the easy tropes it is to with culture/religion/sexuality and what not
a few other character ideas
- ok this’ll sound like a bit of a mouth full but a disabled trans woman of colour
- the idea is that she’d be a Tuxedo Mask like character that comes in and saves there asses while they’re starting out
- She would be Indian and have some form of degeneration disease in her legs that requires her to use crutches
- her crutches would turn into duel wielding swords that would be her magical girl weapons
- would also be Hindu
- She’d be a bit older, early 30’s rather than early 20’s
- I have a lot of worries about doing a character like this
- there are so many bad trope that could happen doing this, I don’t want her disability to define her and also not be what makes her great
- I’m a little worried that her weapon style and personality would be a little too close to the goddess Kali
- it’s someone that I would very much so like to do right and not fuck up but there’s a lot I could fuck up
- I don’t have very many other character idea’s, I want to have a chaotic neutral character but I haven’t figured out much past how I imagine her smile
I think that’s all I got for right now. This helped me with a few plot holes and stuff and if you actually read this far you either really like me or was really bored. Either way I hoped you enjoyed and if you have any advice I welcome to all ideas.
I stumbled upon a tumblr today that helps writers accurately represent characters with racial / nationalistic / religious / sexual orientation (and so on) differences than their own.
The site allows you to submit your own experiences and/or get into contact with others that have in order to enhance the depiction of characters in your creative writing.
What a great idea!
OKAY SO A LOT OF PEOPLE DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THIS
Back when I was in school for graphic design and I tutored people, a lot of people complained about not being able to afford software (because it is ridic expensive). Autodesk offers free software (with a 36 month license key), to ANY students. Want to learn how to animate? Go grab Maya and learn! Wanna learn how to model characters or just general objects? Go grab 3DS Max! Or maybe sculpting is your thing? Go grab Mudbox and have fun!
Or grab Sculptris. There’s a fuckton of programs to mess with and learn things, and no need to go waste time on a torrent. The only downside to the license is it’s not for commercial use.
Technically you don’t have to be a student either and really who’s gonna knowbut it’s a great way to practice and learn something new! You are still allowed to showoff your stuff and throw it in your portfolio, so maybe one day you can get that animating job and not have to waste 3k on one program. All those icons in that third photo? Those are all free programs/apps you can get. They’re all full versions, and come with tutorials from basic to advanced stuff. For both Windows and Mac too.
So go sign up and, go grab some stuff. There’s really no reason not to.
important reminder that autodesk is awesome and wants you to use their awesome programs so you can get good and buy them for realsies later.
“How Do I Write a PoC Character When I’m Not a PoC?”
In honor of a question I’ve received several times, today’s list is dedicated to the writers out there! It’s short but sweet. Here are three wonderful guides to writing people of color when you’re white or generally writing a culture you’re not a part of….
