urie:
that post that’s like “if you don’t feel up for school then just dont go! you dont owe anyone an explanation” like i really appreciate that sentiment but also have you ever existed in the real world at all
That post was targeted towards mentally ill and disabled people who literally cannot make it to school or classes and, hey, some of us CAN’T exist in the real world. We’ve tried existing in the real world, in the school system, and some of us failed. My social anxiety and ADHD, among other things, keeps me out of class because I get so nervous and nauseous even thinking about it that i just can’t get myself to walk through the door. how do you think that makes me, and all the other kids like me feel? Personally, I feel sad, scared, frustrated, etc. because I can’t just “exist in the real world” and go to class like a normal person. Seeing one post for us, one post, that says that it’s okay to not be able to do this, it’s okay that you don’t fit into a traditional school system, it makes us feel less like we’re guilty of something and our crime is being mentally ill.
Fuck this post, and fuck everyone who reblogged it.for real fuck this post
the whole “real world” sentiment is a fallacy; seeing that we don’t live in a vacuum and the problems we express sympathy for actually exist
I missed classes/entire school days all the fucking time because of chronic illness worsened by stress, as well as my mental health, especially after I was raped
I might not have graduated high school had I not had a fantastic friend support system at the time, as well as my partner
and I was constantly invalidated for missing days at a time, so don’t tell me that these posts don’t help because my friends were telling me the same thing when I would feel like a failure
the only time the school system validated me was when I had a “real” illness (mononucleosis) and I was hospitalized so this high and mighty vibe of “greater than thou” I’m getting off this post is disgusting because you definitely sound like the people that justify ableism in school
you are also throwing actual drop outs under the bus because holy fuck there are mentally and physically ill/disabled teens that do drop out because of their health
OP you’re shit and so is anyone who reblogged this uncritically (abled or not; you can still perpetuate ableism as a neurodivergent and/or disabled person) because our health is greater than the system that capitalizes us and determines our worth based on a piece of paper we get after 12 years of absolute hell
